Trust Line: Building Confidence and Reliability

The Trust Line is a dynamic feature within the XRP Ledger, primarily utilized by developers seeking to establish or introduce a new token on the XRP Ledger, often referred to as an IOU (I Owe You), which can be represented within the XRP Ledger ecosystem. Trust lines serve as an enforcement mechanism for a fundamental rule of the XRP Ledger: no one can obligate another party to hold a token they do not wish to possess. Each “trust line” forms a two-way association, including:

  • Identifiers for the involved accounts connected by the trust line.
  • A shared balance, which may appear positive from one account’s perspective and negative from the other’s.
  • Various configurable settings and supplementary metadata.

When you hold a token in your wallet, such as with XUMM, you are essentially extending trust to the entity issuing that token, trusting them to honor the credit associated with it.
Creating a Trustline involves putting faith in the token-issuing entity, establishing a mutual trust agreement. XRP users exercise caution and discernment when deciding which issuers and developers to trust before accepting and holding a particular issuer’s credit.
